Our history

niemanns-9-pics-and-vids-016Scott and Birgie Niemann started Niemann’s Gardens of New Castle in 2007, but their story starts many years earlier.

In 1952, Scott’s parents, Ed and Naomi Niemann, purchased Glenwood Floral, a retail floral shop with greenhouses. Scott grew up in the store, working in the greenhouses and learning the trade from the time he was just a toddler.

Scott studied accounting and business administration at York College before attending DuPage Horticulture School in Chicago. In 1977, he purchased Glenwood Floral from his parents and transformed it into Niemann’s Gardens of Glenwood. He refocused the business, moving from a flower shop to a garden center with landscaping products.

In 1992, he sold the business and went on to become the administrator for buildings and grounds at two colleges, winning awards for the beauty of his campuses.

In 2007, Scott and Birgie “retired” from the college scene and opened Niemann’s Gardens of New Castle. Scott’s mom, Naomi, is part of the business as well, and can often be found among the plants on a summer’s day.

While Birgie has no formal instruction in horticulture, she has learned much from her master gardener husband in the 15 years that they’ve been married. She shares his passion for serving the Lord, serving others, and making life beautiful. Scott and Birgie have had their share of set backs (just ask Scott to wiggle his toes to see what we mean!), but they greet each new day with enthusiasm, thankful for another day in their flower-strewn Colorado paradise.

Scott and Birgie love the Peach Valley area and are dedicated to giving back to the community. They participate in Earth Day festivities, speak to local garden clubs, and support local schools and charities.

Scott is the author of the book Your Green Thumb. He has also taught master gardening classes. Would you like to have Scott speak to your garden club? Email him at niemannsgardens@gmail.com.
