We recommend four feedings each spring/summer, and holidays make it easy to remember: Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. 7 easy steps to landscaping success

Have you ever found yourself walking along beside your home and thinking you should really plant a flower bed by the steps or underneath the window, but you don’t know the first thing to do to get started? Well, read on, my gardening friend…

1. Take a picture of the area that you want to plant with perennials, shrubs or annuals.
2. Bring the picture in to us or send it to us at niemannsgardens@gmail.com.
3. Tell us the dimensions of the area that you want to plant.
4. Tell us the colors you want to use in the flower bed and whether it is full sun, part sun, or shade.
5. We’ll recommend the best plants for your situation.

6. We will lay out the actual plants on an area the size of your area. Feel free to tweak the design and tell us what you like and what isn’t a good match – you won’t hurt our feelings. When the design is just right, we will take a snapshot so that you will have a visual of where to plant them.

Before…
7. Go home and plant, using a necessary fiber such as Cotton Burr, Nutrimoist (if desired) and fertilizer to establish your garden this fall. Then sit back and enjoy the beauty this fall…and next spring as the plants spring forth again.

Grasshopper stoppers

Grasshoppers and Bugs? No problem. Protect your garden and flowers from pests with a variety of products from Niemann’s Gardens.

Nolo Bait–organically and selectively sterilizes and kills grasshoppers only. PET-SAFE. Create a bait trap using a tin can in your garden to entice grasshoppers to munch bait rather than veggies.
Don’t Bug ME and Bug Shooter are organic sprays to eliminate many bugs including aphids, caterpillars, earwigs, mites, and sowbugs. They are SAFE for flowers and vegetables!
Kill-A-Bug is a conventional, granular pesticide that eliminates grasshoppers and many other bugs.

Hydroponics: a great way to grow!

Hydroponics—sounds futuristic, but it’s really quite an old method of gardening. Hydroponic gardening involves growing plants in water instead of soil. This method has been around since Bible times—ever heard of the hanging gardens of Babylon? Those clever Babylonians discovered that their flowers and veggies grew faster if they didn’t use a soil mix. By feeding the plants with water running through the roots, growers could get sometimes as much as twice the growth because they didn’t have to worry so much about the alkalinity or acidity of the soil.

Today we have much more sophisticated and easier ways of growing using hydroponics. Think you’d like to try hydroponic growing? Take a moment to review these tips for success.

1. Water: Water should be neutral in alkalinity or acidity (ideally about 6.3 pH).

2. Food: Use a fertilizer that dissolves and mixes easily with water. Our recommendations are to use FoxFarm products because they are water soluble, organic (OMRI) approved, and easy to use.

3. “Soil”: Use a base for holding plants upright in the water like mesh pots, Hydroton (little pellets of clay), plastic clone mesh, vermiculite, or perlite. You can even use old marbles from your childhood as a “soil” for your plants!

4. O2: Install a small pump in your hydroponic system to continually oxygenate your water. Roots must have oxygenated water to grow.

5. Light: Plants need light! Use good lighting, either sunlight, or light bulbs that carry more of the red and blue spectrum of the light for growing the best plants. Fourteen hours of light and ten hours of darkness is best for great plants and veggies.

6. Heat: Temperatures should be in the range of 75 degrees during the day and 65 degrees at night for optimum growth.

Feed your plants

Do you like to eat? Well, your plants do, too. Proper use of fertilizers is an essential part of summertime growing, especially in this part of the country. In our region, to achieve best results from the soil, you’ve got to add nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—the three things your plants love best to eat.

Have you ever seen a bag of fertilizer and wondered what the numbers mean? Some say 14-14-14 or 15-30-15, but no matter what the numbers are, I want you to think of them as hamburgers. The higher the number, the more hamburgers it is for your plants. Those are the N-P-K numbers (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Different kinds of plants need different ratios of hamburgers to thrive. For example, vegetables need the middle number to be highest, while the last number is important for drought resistance.

Just like with you eating hamburgers, too many can be harmful. That’s why it’s important to find the proper ratio and use it according to the specifications. Come in and talk to us about which ratio and type of fertilizer can best meet your needs and make your garden flourish.
